Union reacts to deadlines set by bankruptcy court to find buyers for RG Steel

By NEWS9

YORKVILLE, Ohio -- United Steelworkers Union Local 1223 president reacted Tuesday to the deadlines set by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of Delaware to find buyers for RG Steel assets.

Union Local 1223 President Jerry Conners said the proceedings would move quickly. He explained all bids from buyers need to be submitted by June 19, sales would be awarded by July 16 and all sales must be finalized by July 27.

Conners said according to court documents, RG Steel was awarded $50 million to keep operating during the bankruptcy proceedings.

Conners said workers with Local 1223 are expected to go back to work next week, according to the Yorkville plant manager.

"As of this morning, that's what his plans were," said Conners. "Now that could change if they tell him he doesn't have any money. But according to this, we do have money. We've had no direction from Baltimore. I don't know if the people in Wheeling and Warren have had any direct direction from Baltimore."

United Steelworkers Local 1375 President Darryl Parker said more than 260 workers have been laid off at a northeast Ohio steel mill as Maryland-based RG Steel prepares to shut down its plant in Warren. About 500 more employees are still working but likely face layoffs as the shutdown proceeds.

A spokeswoman says RG Steel is filling existing orders but isn't accepting new ones.
