Woman Gets 2 Years Of Probation For Drunken Driving

OMAHA, Neb. -- A Nebraska woman who was driving a state ward while her blood-alcohol level was five times the state's legal limit pleaded guilty on Thursday to DUI and child abuse.Denise Thomson, 25, of Elkhorn, got two years of probation. She was pulled over in February after several motorists reported seeing the car she was driving swerve in and out of traffic. A child, who was a ward of the state, was in the back seat.At the time, Thomson was a contractor for the state's department of Health and Human Services.She pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and attempted negligent child abuse.Thomson was also ordered to spend 90 days in jail, but only the first seven days are mandatory.Defense attorney John Hascall said his client knows she hurt a lot of people."She apologized to the family, to the little girl -- who was scared. She apologizes for the situation," Hascall said.After her release, she may be turned over to a halfway house, where she can continue her alcohol treatment program.Sarpy County deputies said they performed a field sobriety test on Thomson and then took her to the Sarpy County Jail, where her blood-content tested at 0.415 percent. Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis told Omaha television station KETV at the time that he believes that Thomson's was the highest blood-alcohol reading he's seen in his career.This was her first offense.
