Toyota Dominates Best Resale Value Awards

Japanese Automakers Places 3 Vehicles In Kelley Blue Book's Top 10

After naming Toyota as the brand with the highest resale value earlier this month, Kelley Blue Book is reinforcing that honor with its 2010 model-year best resale value winners.

Toyota placed three vehicles on Kelley Blue Book's top 10 Best Resale Value Awards, which recognizes vehicles for their projected retained value five years from now.

The Toyota Prius, RAV4 and Tacoma made the list, which did not specify a ranking. Chevrolet had two cars on the list, with the Camaro SS and Corvette, as did British automaker MINI, with the Cooper and the Cooper Clubman.

The rest of the list included the Audi A5, the BMW M3 and the Honda CR-V.

"Taking the time to research and choose vehicle makes, models and options wisely now can help new-car shoppers keep additional money in their pocket down the road when they go to sell or trade-in the vehicle," said James Bell, executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book.

Depreciation often is the greatest expense incurred by drivers during the first five years of vehicle ownership, Bell said. An average vehicle will only retain about 35 percent of its original value after a five-year ownership period, meaning that a $50,000 new car today will only be worth somewhere close to $17,500 after five years.

Kelley Blue Book also picked the top resale winners in 16 specific categories, with Toyota again leading the way with four selections: the Tacoma for best mid-size pickup, the Highlander for best mid-size utility vehicle, the Sienna for best van and the Prius for best hybrid/alternative fuel car.

Honda had the second most winners in the vehicle categories, with the CR-V taking the compact utility vehicle category, the Pilot tops among full-size utility vehicles and the Accord best in the mid-size car category.

Lexus, Toyota's luxury brand, also had two category winners: the Lexus RX 350 for best luxury utility vehicle and the Lexus IS for best near-luxury car.

Earlier this month, the organization announced that Toyota was the brand with the highest resale value, with its vehicles maintaining an average of 38.8 percent of their original price after five years. That was down from 42.7 percent last year, a drop Kelley Blue Book attributed to overcrowding in the small car market.

Toyota's Lexus had the highest projected resale value among luxury brands, at 39.3 percent. Honda, BMW, Subaru and Acura also were high scorers. Jeep was the only domestic brand in the top ten.
