Oglebay Resort and Conference Center

Situated high on a hilltop in Ohio County, W.Va., is Earl Oglebay's former summer estate.

When he died in 1926, Oglebay willed his land to the city of Wheeling. Now, his home is the world-famous Oglebay Resort and Conference Center -- more than 1,700 family-friendly acres of golf courses, walking trails, gardens, ski slopes, cottages, retail shops, a zoo and more.

"It's been a place of hospitality and people coming to enjoy themselves, and that's what Mr. Oglebay wanted," said Caren Knoyer, assistant director of advertising and communications for the park.

Some of Oglebay Resort's best-known features are several levels of golf courses designed for every ability.

For the amateur, there's the par 3 golf course.

Rod Haley, director of golf and skiing, said it's a short course, just 18 holes and requires only a few clubs to play.

"It's good for families and beginners," Haley said.

For the more experienced golfer, Oglebay features an executive and two championship courses, one of which was designed by golf-legend Arnold Palmer.

Even when it's not golf season, Oglebay is still a busy place.

Every winter, thousands of people come to see the annual Festival of Lights -- a million lights on a 6-mile drive.

And there are Oglebay's year-round features, like its seven different retail shops.

"(At) the shops, you can find something for as little as 50 cents for the kids to go in and buy something with an Oglebay logo on there, or you can come into the glass shop and buy something for a couple hundred dollars," said Knoyer.

From every price range to every taste, Oglebay's shops include the Palm Room with live plants; Gourmet In The Garden, featuring wines, gift baskets and Oglebay's own line of cooking products; and the Speidel Shop, for the golf fan.

Oglebay is constantly expanding. One of the newest features coming to the Good Zoo is an aviary where visitors can actually hold and feed the birds.

"That's the best way to appreciate and enjoy and animal like this," said Penny Miller, Good Zoo director. "To be able to hold it on your hand and feed it."

The zoo also has a discovery lab with exhibits at the perfect height for a child.

"We try to do hands-on interactive exhibits where families can come interact together and actually do things, not just stand and look at something," Miller said.

Knoyer said Oglebay's rich past makes the resort one-of-a-kind.

"That's what makes it unique in the fact that it does have a history. People come back year after year, so they're creating their own history to go along with the history of Oglebay," she said.
