Wisconsin-Green Bay (13-15) At Cleveland State (10-16)
GAME NOTES: The regular season winds down for the Horizon League today and seedings for the conference tournament are up for grabs in Cleveland, as the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix take on the Cleveland State Vikings. The Phoenix are looking to close out the regular season with a rare win on the road, the team has just one win away from Green Bay this season. The squad has lost its last two outings, including a tough 68-64 defeat at the hands of Fairleigh Dickinson last Saturday. UWGB currently sits in seventh place in the HL standings, but can finish as high as third depending on the rest of today's league results. With a win, the Vikings can wrap up the eighth seed in the tournament or with a loss could drop to ninth. After picking up consecutive wins for just the fourth time this season, CSU dropped a hard-fought 72-67 decision in overtime to Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday. The Phoenix hold a 38-30 lead in the all-time series, but fell 66-63 to the Vikings on January 21st.
If the Phoenix are able to secure a third place finish in the league standings they will earn a first round bye and will host a second round game. The squad has had trouble scoring a lot of points this season, netting only 66.6 ppg on 43.1 percent shooting from the field. Ryan Evanochko leads the attack, netting a team-high 16.1 ppg while handing out 5.1 apg. Mike Schachtner is adding 10.3 ppg on solid 47.1 percent shooting from the floor. At the defensive end of the floor, the team is surrendering 68.4 ppg to its opponents on 44.2 percent field goal shooting. The Phoenix shot 41.7 percent from the field in the loss to Fairleigh Dickinson, but managed to hit just 1-of-14 threes. Evanochko once again led the way with 24 points. Terry Evans added 11, and Josh Lawrence pitched in with 10 and 12 boards.
Like the Phoenix, the Vikings are not apt to score a boatload of points, netting 64.3 ppg on just 40 percent shooting from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc. The squad is led by the trio of Ije Nwankwo, J'Nathan Bullock, and Raheem Moss on the offensive end. Nwankwo leads the way with 11.8 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Bullock is netting 11 ppg on 45.3 percent shooting from the field, and Moss chips in with 10.1 ppg and leads the team with 137 three-point attempts. On the defensive end of the court, the club is yielding 68.2 ppg to the opposition on 43.3 percent shooting from the floor. In falling to UIC in overtime, the team hit just 3-of-12 field goals in the extra session and was outscored 9-4 from the free throw line. Bullock led the way with 25 points and eight rebounds, and Nwankwo added 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
While the Phoenix have not been good on the road, by the same token, the Vikings have not been all that great in Cleveland. Expect a tight contest in this one, with UWGB pulling out its second road win of the season in a must win game.
