Columbiana County Sheriff Resigns After Drunken Driving Plea

Four months after he pleaded guilty to drunken driving, a local sheriff announced his resignation Wednesday.Columbiana County Sheriff David Smith said he will take on a new position at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort.Smith was stopped by police in the fall of 2007 on suspicion of driving drunk and pleaded guilty in April.The sheriff had many ups and downs during his 30-year career. Earlier this month, four inmates escaped from the Columbiana County Jail. All were captured and are now back in police custody.Smith has recommended the appointment of Chief Deputy Allen Haueter as interim county sheriff.
