Belmont County Initiative Could Save Voters Time, Money

Thursday, August 28, 2008 – updated: 12:14 pm EDT August 28, 2008

At least one local county is taking a step that could help save voters money and time.

The Belmont County Board of Elections is mailing out absentee applications forms to everyone living in the county.

Other areas in Ohio do this, but not all. Bill Shubat, the county's board of elections director, said the more people vote from home, the more time they will save.

Shubat also said if more people vote absentee, poll workers will be able to tally up the results sooner. He said the board of elections is expecting at least an 80 percent voter turnout this election, so the more absentee votes the better.

Further, he said absentee voting saves voters money and time.

"Realistically, anybody that would leave their house ... are going to spend at least $4 to go anywhere. A lot of people are on such a fixed income that $4 could mean they have something to eat or buy a prescription drug," Shubat said.
