Presented in partnership with Chatham University.Don Kretschmann and Reed Soergel team up to present this Field Day for apple producers of various scales and experience. In the morning, we will take a walk around the orchard, discussing what issues growers should be paying attention to during the critical spring season - when pests have the potential to do the most damage - and taking advantage of opportunities to scout for pests. Discussions will focus on the timing and life cycles of various pests, monitoring methods and considerations of a well-designed spray program for foliar feeding. In the afternoon, Don will lead the group in a demonstration of simple grafting techniques. Participants will then have the opportunity to try their hand at grafting with root stock (that will later be planted at the orchard at Chatham University!).  About the Farm & Prensenters.Becky & Don Kretschmann of Kretschmann Farm, winner of the 2013 Sustainable Ag Leadership Award, have been providing Pittsburgh area customers with organically grown produce and fruits since 1972. The farm has been certified organic through OEFFA since they became one of the region's first organic growers over 30 years ago. The Kretschmanns grow a dozen types of apples in their small organic apple orchard.
