Biking Good Exercise Indoors Or Out

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 – updated: 10:04 am EDT May 16, 2008

Experts say riding a bicycle is a great way to improve your heart health, burn calories, boost your body’s immunity and spend time with family.

Bike riding can be beneficial whether you are riding outdoors or spinning your wheels inside.

On a rainy day, indoor biking is perfect.

Bicycling is an exercise health experts say can benefit anyone at any age.

Shelby Zarotney tried out several stationary bikes at Trinity’s Trim For Life recently.

Their benefits include resistance, muscle toning and speed choices designed to increase your fitness level.

Bicycling, health experts say, is a great way to get fit and go easy on the joints.

Biking outside helps to maintain balance, strengthen core abdominal muscles and strengthen the lower back.

“Talk about the advantages of biking in terms of obviously low impact,” said Dave Krynock, an exercise physiologist with Trinity Health System.

“With the Airdyne, you’re holding on so it’s more stable and helps with the knees, too,” Krynock said.

“You don’t have that impact on knees as on a gym floor or walking on a treadmill,” he said.

There are many hiking and walking trails that are perfect for biking.

The best part is that you can take your children along for a ride.

Experts advise that anytime you exercise, the best fluid to take along is water.

Healthy snack choices include granola, dried fruit and whole wheat crackers.

If the kids are riding along, make sure they are equipped with helmets and elbow and knee pads.
