Going Green – Schools-Diocese of Steubenville – St. Mary Central School/Martins FerrySt. Mary Central School in Martins Ferry has been doing many activities over the past several years aimed at helping to save the environment. The school and community are involved in paper recycling.The school collected 12,410 pounds of paper for recycling during the months of October, November and December.The school receives about $70 a month for the paper, which averages about 3,500 tons each month.The funds are used to reduce the cost of a three-day environmental program called Nature’s Classroom that students in grades 5-8 attend every other year.The school also recycles cell phones and used toner and ink cartridges. They send them to the Global Resource company and the school receives about $80 each year for this effort.Plans are underway for a possible park clean-up campaign in the spring.
