Holy Rosary Central School Honored For Green Efforts

POSTED: 8:56 pm EST December 23, 2007
UPDATED: 8:30 pm EST January 4, 2008

Like all students, those at Holy Rosary Central School practice reading, writing and arithmetic. But they also are starts at practicing the three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle.

For that reason, the school, under the leadership of Principal Theresa DiPiero, is being recognized as WTOV9’s Going Green School of the Month for January.

Sara Moziejko, a student from Holy Rosary, said it takes about 75,000 trees just to make one edition of the Sunday New York Times. Because of that, a paper recycling box was placed in every room.

Last year, every student at Holy Rosary recycled enough plastic that they were rewarded with a book bag made from that same recycled plastic. The same plastic that most of us dispose as garbage was made into 288 book bags.

Even more impressive, the recycling goes beyond school walls. Students take the three R's home and educate their parents on the importance of a healthy environment. The parents in turn pitch in cans from home to be recycled.

Holy Rosary school also uses the proceeds from recycling cans to help pay for the science clubs field trip to the Columbus Science Center.
