STEUBENVILLE -- The School of Bright Promise in March will be collecting used sneakers to recycle, officials announced. The sneakers will be sent to the Nike Recycling Center as part of their “Reuse-A-Shoe” campaign. The Nike processing plant cuts the shoes into three parts – the outer sole, upper sole and the midsole. The parts then go into a grinding machine where they are made into Nike Grind, a product that sent around the world for use as outdoor athletic surfaces such as basketball courts, tennis courts, running tracks and playgrounds. The school recycles paper, plastic, metals and glass and has been recognized as one of the top 100 schools in the nation for the amount of glass collected. The school also hosts a permanent location for the public to drop off recyclables.
