Going Green Schools-Hancock County Schools-Oak Glen Middle School
NEW CUMBERLAND – The Oak Glen Middle School Student Council initiated a recycling program this school year. The effort brought in 360 pounds of paper the first week. The students labeled boxes for recycling and placed them in all of the classrooms, computer labs and next to the copy machines in the office. Each week Student Council members empty the boxes. The paper is taken to Valley Converting in Toronto for recycling, where it is recycled into cardboard backs for notebooks and legal pads. The Student Council members also labeled a large bin and placed it in the cafeteria as a collection site for aluminum cans. The cans are collected each week and taken to Six Recycling in East Liverpool. The Student Council members also spent time at the beginning of the year pulling weeks and planting grass and flower bulbs around the building to beautify it.The Student Council also is planning to clean up community parks and hold a clothing and shoe drive, with all of the clothing and shoes collected donated to charity.
