John Gregg Elementary School Recognized

John Gregg Elementary School in Bergholz recently adopted county Road 75A in Jefferson County.

The road runs right in front of the school.

Twice a year, the third- and fourth-graders at John Gregg get their hands dirty to keep the streets clean.

They picked up garbage and debris, picking up glass and cans with care and finding everything from nails to hubcaps.

The students said they like to clean up because it helps the environment and finding interesting things make it like a scavenger hunt.

The students at John Gregg also are involved in several other Going Green projects.

“At John Gregg, we recycle tennis shoes. The kids have brought in phone books. We do plastic. We do paper. We do pop. We adopt our highway. Next year, we are getting into pop cans. They do a great job recycling here and everyone is excited about it,” said Mindy Carpenter, a teacher at John Gregg.

For keeping the streets clean and our environment green, John Gregg Elementary School and Principal Fatima Smuck received the Going Green School of the Month Award for May.
