WHEELING, W.Va. -- Newly elected mayor of Wheeling, Andy McKenzie, said he has some big “greener” plans for the future of the city.“The question really is, are we using our resources the best possible way," questioned McKenzie. He said he plans to answer that question, starting with the little things the city uses, like light bulbs and paper."Since I've been elected, I could probably stack 10 feet high the amount of paper I've been given," said McKenzie. He said changing the way the city bills and pays out could save tens of thousands of dollars. He wants to take it to the Internet and shoot for less mail."Those may sound like small [things], but when you're doing it thousands of times in a year it's costing the taxpayers a tremendous amount of money," said McKenzie. Then there are the bigger things -- like the city vehicles that are far from fuel efficient. McKenzie said he’s looking at hybrid options and alternative fuels to help shrink the city's carbon footprint and kick the cash back to the taxpayers."Not only do they save the city of Wheeling a tremendous amount of money, they also will be a tremendous help to the tax burden to the citizens of Wheeling. We really then can use those dollars for economic development or other ideas to make Wheeling a better place," said McKenzie.City council will be talking over the new plans over the next 30-60 days. Then they’ll be debated and enacted.
