Health Officials Say They Have 'Abundance' Of Nasal Swine Flu Vaccine

As more people request the swine flu shot, some health officials said their nasal vaccine supply is building up.

Health officials said many parents are choosing the injection for their children and not opting for the nasal spray version.

"We have an abundance of nasal available because it was made fast and it was made first," said Howard Gamble of the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department.

That's why health care providers are encouraging people to get the nasal spray if they can healthfully do so. The spray contains a live virus, which is why some people should not receive it.

"It's not appropriate for caregivers, but for the general public -- moms and dads at home, kids, everybody (who is) well and healthy -- the nasal vaccine is fine as far as a live vaccine in the body," Gamble said.

The nasal vaccine is approved for people ages 2 to 49 years old.

"If they're healthy, not pregnant, no asthma or other problems, then they can get the nasal spray," Gamble said.

The swine flu shot is approved for ages 6 months and older and is the recommended form of vaccination for those who can't get the spray for health reasons.

The Ohio County Health Department is wrapping up vaccinations for school age kids this week. Next week, the department will move on to the college vaccination clinics.
