Clifford Wins OVAC Coach of the Year Award

Former Harrison Central baseball coach Justin Clifford was named the Bill Van Horne OVAC Coach of the Year at Monday's OVAC Banquet of Champions in Wheeling.


Clifford led the Huskies to the Ohio state final four for the first time in school history. winning the school's first district and OVAC 4A championships along the way.


Clifford stepped down as Huskies' baseball coach prior to the school year after accepting the job as dean of students at Harrison Central. He remains the school's basketball coach.


The other finalists for the award included Madonna's Doug Taylor (football), Wheeling Central's Mel Stephens (boys' basketball), Cambridge's Michael Denniston (tennis) and Wheeling Park's Don Headley (golf).


Also at Monday's banquet, 74 OVAC champions received pennants for titles in 19 points.


The OVAC Subway Cup overall champion banners were also handed out. Wheeling Park (5A), St. Clairsville (4A), Linsly (3A), Wheeling Central (2A) and Madonna (1A) were the winners. St. Clairsville and Madonna have won this award all five years.
