WHEELING, W.Va. -- The guys from the 1964 OVAC All-Star Game were reunited Tuesday afternoon at WesBanco Arena as the conference continued to bring back the players who played in the game 50 years earlier.
Martins Ferry grad, former NFL player, and veteran Ohio Valley football coach Dan McGrew was among those returned. McGrew, who was joined by 10 players from that game at the luncheon, was the head coach of an Ohio team that won the game, 2-0, on a bad snap by West Virginia.
"Awe heck, it was an offensive showdown," McGrew said. "There were two teams that were very close together. We were out at Cadiz and the kids were in the gym with cots. Defense is always ahead of offense and evidently (West Virginia) Coach (George) Strager was supposed to be an offensive genius... I guess if you can coach offense, you know how to shut it down, too."
It's something that has stuck with Paden City's Terry Yeater for half of a century.
"I remember we played a lot of good defense, but there wasn't much offense," he said. "The thing that I remember the most was being involved in the game and talking about it the last 50 years and telling my kids and my grandkids and telling them it's really a great tradition.
"It's just something that you can't ever replace. It sticks with you the rest of your life. It's really great."
These guys will be joined by more former teammates on Sunday when they'll be honored during the first quarter of the 69th Annual OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football game presented by WTOV9.
The game kicks off at 7:15 p.m. at Wheeling  Island Stadium.
