WEIRTON, W.Va. -- There’s a buzz in the air as Weir High School prepares to play host the Weirton Medical Center Kickoff Weekend presented by WTOV9.
It’s also being dubbed “The Clash at the Carey.”
There's a lot going into this big event and a lot of preparations are underway.
"Here we are today, a couple days before the Kickoff Classic and we – the Weir High students and the Weir High community -- are very, very excited about having it here this weekend," Principal Dan Enich said.
The action all starts with the Spinning Jennys performing at 3 p.m. right at the 50-yard line. Then at 4 p.m., the first game kicks off -- Oak Glen vs. Edison. That will be followed by a special exhibition scrimmage showcasing the Weirton Little Steelers and Oak Glen Junior Bears.
Then it's back to high school ball.
"As you know, the Ohio Valley is crazy about high school football,” Enich said. “We are too; we're crazy about our sports, too, but its seems like there’s a buzz in the air about high school football when it starts. WTOV9 has traditionally been involved with kicking it off the last few years with the Kickoff Classics and we wanted to be a part of that."
The event includes something different this year. A team of skydivers will parachute in with the ball to kickoff Game 2: Weir vs. Steubenville Catholic Central.
"A local budding rivalry that we're trying to get back into,” Enich said. “And that’s going to be a good matchup because they’ve been very good in the past. Of course nobody knows what we're going to do this year, so we're hoping to have a nice game."
Tickets are $10.
