Updated: Thursday, August 29 2013, 10:15 AM EDT
In the Ohio Valley, high school football is more than a passion -- it's a way of life! That's why WTOV9 is the market leader and is the best television station in America when it comes to covering high school football.
WTOV9's high school football game plan begins way before the teams begin their two-a-day practices in the hot summer sun, and it extends well beyond the state championship games. High school football season is here, and you can always count on NEWS9 Sports to be everywhere this season.
For decades, WTOV9 has been the leader in covering high school football in the Ohio Valley. And in 2013, our coverage will be greater than ever.
This season, our coverage and dedication started in mid-June with our three separate Media Days in Wheeling, Steubenville and Harrison Central High School. During our Media Day events, we met up with all of our 48 local high schools, interviewed coaches and players from each team, and gathered information to provide our viewers with the most complete and comprehensive coverage of high school football anywhere in the country. All of this information will be used to supply WTOV9.com and NEWS9 sportscasts with the best information possible for our viewers.
Before the players hit the field, the West Virginia Northern Community College WTOV9.com High School Football Super Site gets fans ready for the season with an exclusive section for each school's vital pre-season information with hundreds of pre-season videos, including players' and coaches' interviews and hundreds of players' profiles and photos. We’re proud to cover all of our 48 teams in our market and much, much more!
During the first week of August, after our live coverage of the OVAC All-Star Game is over, our award-winning sports team featuring sports director Don Sloan and sports anchor Rob Metzger travel to each team's summer camp to preview all 48 area high school football teams. All of these in-depth preseason previews are broadcast on NEWS9 Sports and on WTOV9.com for all to see.
This August, the WTOV9 High School Football Game of the Week is back for its 25th great year. This year's exciting regular season broadcast schedule includes 19 rivalry games! This year's broadcast season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 29, with the McDonald’s/OVAC Kickoff Night presented by Wheeling Hospital and WTOV9.
The event will feature four big games in two great Ohio Valley cities, and all will be broadcast on WTOV9. At Wheeling Island Stadium, we will feature a double header. In the first game starting at 5:30 p.m., Harrison Central travels down the river to take on the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights, while the second game highlights the Cameron Dragons versus the Bishop Donahue Bishops. Then at the same time in Wintersville, Kettlewell Stadium hosts the Weir High Red Riders and Indian Creek Redskins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Weirton Madonna Blue Dons and the Beallsville Blue Devils.
Again this year, the First Choice America Credit Union WTOV9 Game of the Week can also be viewed worldwide via WTOV9.com. The audience response to our Game of the Week coverage has been huge since we began broadcasting the games in 1989. WTOV9’s audience out-delivers the competition's programming by more than 400 percent. The following is our broadcast schedule for 2013. For the third week, we left this game open for our "flex" game. During the season, we will let the fans decide what the best matchup will be that week.
