Edison Local Feels Pain At Pump

POSTED: 11:33 am EDT June 19, 2008
UPDATED: 1:00 pm EDT June 19, 2008

A local school official said rising fuel costs will force the district to make cuts unless the state steps in to help.

The Edison Local School District covers over 200 square miles, geographically the second-largest district in Ohio.

The school district averages over 3,500 miles a day -- that’s like driving from New York to California.

Transportation Director Danny Householder said that unless the district receives some financial help from the state, cuts are going to have to be made.

“Cutting some routes is where we’re going to start. If there are certain roads we don’t need to go down, we’re not going to go down,” said Householder. “Possibly purchasing a couple of passenger vans that get better gas mileage.”

Householder said the district has asked U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson and Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland for their support in addressing the transportation expenses.

The Edison Local district has been pushed into a financial crisis due to the unexpected increase in diesel fuel prices.

Householder said he will be meeting with the superintendent and the school board soon to discuss their options for the upcoming school year.
