Monopoly Replaces Boardwalk As Most Valuable

'World Edition' Hits Shelves On Aug. 26

Wednesday, August 20, 2008 – updated: 3:24 pm EDT August 21, 2008

The phrase "Take A Walk On Boardwalk" now means nothing to fans of the legacy board game ‘Monopoly.’

That’s because Boardwalk—and every other original property from the 65-year-old board game—is not part of Monopoly’s new "Here and Now: World Edition," which hits shelves on Aug. 26 around the world.

Montreal has replaced Boardwalk on the board along with Riga, the national capital of Latvia, replacing Park Place in the valuable dark blue corner.

So, why Montreal?

During a six-week period earlier this year, players from around the world voted for global cities that they would like to see on the World edition game board, and Montreal came out on top.

Despite the somewhat obscure choices to replace Boardwalk and Park Place, many of the world’s largest cities are featured in the new version.

In addition to the dark blue corner of the board, here’s how the rest of the ‘World’ board plays out.

Green: Cape Town, Belgrade, Paris (Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Pacific)

Yellow: Jerusalem, Hong Kong, Beijing (Marvin Gardens, Ventnor and Atlantic)

Red: London, New York, Sydney (Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky)

Orange: Vancouver, Shanghai, Rome (New York, Tennessee and St. James)

Magenta: Toronto, Kyiv, Istanbul (Virginia, State, St. Charles Place)

Light Blue: Athens, Barcelona, Tokyo (Connecticut, Vermont, Oriental)

Brown: Taipei, Gdynia (Mediterranean, Baltic)

Changes to the Community Chest and Chance sections have been made and tokens are different to reflect the different communities around the world that are involved in the game.
