House Explodes In Glen Dale

Emergency crews said a woman is lucky she left her home for work when she did Friday, because less than a half hour later, an explosion left the home in pieces.

Sharon Wolf said she had just left for work Friday afternoon when she saw emergency crews rushing past her.

"I was working on Madison Avenue," said Wolf. "And I kept seeing the fire trucks; you know, never dreamed of it being here."

She hurried back to her home on Grandview Lane just after 4:30 p.m. to find an explosion left the back wall blown out, windows shattered, and the house actually shifted off its foundation.

"It's a mess," said Wolf. "It's a real mess. Ceiling's all down; it's a real mess."

Sharon's neighbor, Iris Yocum, was going through her mail when she heard the loud boom.

"I looked down and saw half the house had blown out where the bathroom's supposed to be," said Yocum. "And I called 911."

Glen Dale Fire Chief Norman Pastorius said a gas buildup in the house caused the explosion.

He said Wolf wouldn't have made it out alive.

"She just got out not too long before this blew," said Pastorius. "Thank goodness she wasn't here."

No one was hurt in the explosion, but Wolf is now left with the worry of what to do next.

"I have no insurance," said Wolf. "I don't know what I'll do."

The gas is turned off in the home so that crews can do a full investigation to make sure there is no more gas building up in the home.
