Scouts Save Girl From Burning Home

Posted: 9:30 pm EDT October 28, 2006Updated: 8:08 pm EST October 29, 2006

A Wintersville home on Ellsworth Street that caught fire Friday night is a total loss, but it could have been an even sadder story if it weren't for next door neighbors, Daniel Gamble and his son Shane.

The fire started in the kitchen, but quickly spread, trapping a 13-year-old girl in her upstairs bedroom.

Shane heard the girl's cries for help from the window and that's when he and his dad jumped into action.

The father and son first tried to crawl through the home, but the smoke was too thick. So, they grabbed a ladder and brought the young girl down safely.

Daniel Gamble said, "It was a little steep and she didn't want to come out. So, I put a foot between my ladder and her window and told her you have to come out."

Gamble, who's a local Boy Scout master, said he's used to climbing ladders, but this time, he was scared too.

"A ladder is not a big deal to me, but with a fire and a little girl screaming out the window, it shakes you up a little bit," said Gamble.

The father and son may have saved a life, but the scouts don't consider themselves neighborhood heroes, they said they only did what they had to do.
