Investing In Renters' Insurance Can Protect You
Most people in the Ohio Valley agree that insurance for people who rent their homes is important, but not many people are investing in the coverage. "It's very important, just in case your apartment or somebody else's apartment should catch on fire, then you would lose what you have, too," said Patricia Dickey of Steubenville. The massive flames of a Weirton fire in October destroyed an apartment complex on Orchard Street, leaving 5 people homeless with only the clothes on their backs. Tom McDonald, who works for State Farm Insurance, said, "If you don't have insurance, you're out of luck. The few bucks you pay for is probably one of the best buys." He said the insurance covers a person from theft, fire, lightning and other disasters. The first step is locating a company. You can even pick up the phone and add it to your auto insurance, often for a discounted price. Next, create an inventory list of your household items and remember to ask agents about actual cost value and replacement cost value. Replacement cost value replaces items at a cost that is not depreciated. Renter's insurance also covers liabilty. McDonald said, "If you have someone visiting your home who trips over a rug and put a suit against you, or if they didn't want to put a suit but wanted medical bills covered, it would cover a percentage of those bills." People who don't have the insurance are now thinking twice.
