Posted: 6:01 pm EST November 3, 2006Updated: 9:08 pm EST November 3, 2006

Republican Congressman Bob Ney has resigned his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

A Republican leadership source said Ney submitted his letter to the U.S. Speaker of the House late Friday.

According to the source, Ney wrote that it was “an honor to serve the people of the 18th Congressional District of Ohio for the past 12 years.” It continued, “I’m deeply grateful to constituents for the opportunity to represent them in the U.S. House of Representatives.” Ney also wrote, “I’m proud of my many accomplishments,” and that “I’ve helped improve the life of the people of the 18th Congressional District.”

Ney was under pressure from fellow Republicans to resign his seat after pleading guilty in connection with the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal.

Ney is scheduled to be sentenced in January for his role in the scandal. It’s expected the six-term Republican will be sentenced to 27 months in federal prison.
