Local Employers Charged With Hiring Illegal Workers

Four local employers have been accused of hiring undocumented workers in Ohio County.

Ohio County prosecutor Scott Smith filed the complaints Thursday afternoon in magistrate court.

Smith said he authorized the Department of Labor to file criminal charges against four companies suspected of having undocumented workers employed in the county.

The following were charged:

*Jamie Simon of Simon Roofing and Sheet Metal with one charge

*Alyce Fortson of Consultants Unlimited, a subcontractor of Comcast Cable with three charges

*Dave Hinerman of Better Construction Unlimited with three charges

*Dick Bryer of Bryer Paying with four charges

Smith said the complaints were filed "to show we're serious. It's to see that people are playing by the rules."

All four employers face fines if convicted of the misdemeanor offenses. For first-time offenders, the fines range from $100 to $1,000 for each offense.

Smith said he wants to see more done to target companies that hire illegal immigrants.

"We'd like to see more investigative power for the Department of Labor and additional manpower for the Department of Labor because these undocumented workers cost the state of West Virginia and taxpayers a lot of money" Smith said.

Smith said the practice of hiring undocumented workers is common in West Virginia, and said additional charges could be forthcoming.
