Can Fuel Pill Improve Gas Mileage?

The maker of the MPG-CAP claims drivers can get 7 to 14 percent better gas mileage regardless of the vehicle type.

Nick Damis of Hammer Auto Body said he finds the claim difficult to believe.

Damis said he believes car manufacturers would be pushing the products if they worked, and said he hasn't heard any confirmation that the products actually do work.

So NEWS9 put the MPG-CAP to the test. With the help of Jeff Oechslein, Dino Orsatti found out his exact gas mileage without the pill. After using a full tank of gas, Jeff got 16.1 miles per gallon. Then, he put in an MPG-CAP pill in his tank. On this tank of gas, Jeff got 18.5 miles per gallon, a percentage increase within the range the maker of the pill suggests.

Using the average price of self-serve regular gas in the Ohio Valley on Nov. 20, it cost Jeff $7.17 less to fill up after using the gas pill. When you subtract the $2 for the cost of the pill, it comes out to a savings of $5.17 per tank.

Kevin Voeghtly, a representative of FFI Distributors, which sells the MPG-CAP, said the pill not only improves gas mileage, but actually reduces the wear and tear on the engine.

Voeghtly said the caps create a catalytic micro-coating on the combustion chamber surfaces, resulting in improved combustion efficiency and lower harmful exhaust emissions.

The MPG-CAP is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA tested the product and reported it doesn't do any harm to the vehicle, but the report did not guarantee improved mileage.
