OHIO COUNTY, WV -- Health directors said Thursday night active norovirus cases in Ohio County are going away as quickly as they came.Dr. William Mercer, director of the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department, said as of 9:30 p.m. Thursday, there were six active cases of the norovirus at the Peterson Rehabilitation Center and Geriatric Center. NEWS9 was told patients in the 6 cases are still dealing with symptoms of the Norovirus, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Since the outbreak last week, 55 cases of the norovirus have been reported at the center. As for the 28 suspected cases at the Continuous Care Center, also in Wheeling, Mercer said the number of active cases is down to 12, meaning the patients in the other 14 cases have recovered.Mercer said the drop is due to both facilities keeping the patients isolated and well hydrated. The cases at the Continuous Care Center are just suspected, not confirmed, cases. As people start to recover, both buildings are taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. They are restricting visitors and will not admit any new patients.Sick staffers are being told to stay at home.Washing hands is mandatory in the facilities, and crews are using a bleach solution to disinfect surfaces. As for the suspected cases at the Continuous Care Center, NEWS9 was told samples were sent to a lab Wednesday, and results should be in soon.Natalie Pasquarella, NEWS9
