New Possible Cases of Norovirus

Dr. William Mercer with the Wheeling Ohio County Health Department visited facilities on Saturday where about 80 people became sick in Wheeling.

Mercer discovered that even though fewer people are getting sick, there are two to three new cases.

Mercer said, "We have two to three new cases that just started within the past 24 hours."

On Thursday, about 80 people became ill with symptoms of the norovirus.

There were 55 confirmed cases at the Peterson Rehab Hospital and Geratric Center and 28 suspected cases at the Continuous Care Center in Wheeling.

Norovirus spreads rapidly by touching surfaces that haven't been cleaned properly and causes vomiting, diarrea and nausea.

After the visits, Mercer said he believes the outbreak is almost over.

Mercer said, "I think we are seeing the tail end of this. It's on the decrease, but not gone."

Mercer wants family members and friends of relatives who were sickened to understand there still needs to be restrictions on visits.

The cases at the Continuous Care Center are not confirmed.

Results should be back on Monday to determine if the norovirus sickened people at that facility.
