Former Congressman To Be Sentenced Today

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- Former Congressman Bob Ney faces sentencing Friday for his convictions related to a bribery scandal.Ney resigned in November after pleading guilty to conspiracy and making false statements.Last week, the Ohio Republican asked a federal judge to note that alcohol addiction contributed to his misconduct.The former representative of the 18th Congressional district faces more than two years in prison. His lawyers have asked that the six-term lawmaker be recommended for a prison drug abuse program, which could make him eligible for release in about a year.Federal prosecutors are pushing for a 27-month sentence, saying Ney was at the center of a conspiracy that sold congressional services for cash and gifts.
