Local Ohio Residents React to Ney's Sentencing

Posted: 5:50 pm EST January 19, 2007

Resident’s from Bob Ney's district reacted to the news of his jail sentence, and the work he did as a congressman of the 18-th congressional district.

Belmont County was part of Ney's district and current county employees who worked with Ney said he did a lot of good things for his district while in office and brought in lots of money to the area.

Others said regardless of what good he's done, he should be forced to serve time for the laws he broke.

Many noted that they are glad to hear that Ney is confronting his problem with alcohol abuse.

"After what he did I think he did deserve it, being in that position. You trust those people and for what he did, I just don't think it's acceptable," said Brennan Smith of St. Clairsville.

"I’m glad [he’s getting help for alcohol abuse]. A lot of people in this area have alcohol problems and I think that it’s good that he's doing that," said Tammy Archer of St. Clairsville.

"Regardless of which side of the coin you were on politically I think Bob Ney served his constituents very well in the entire district," said Belmont County Commissioner Mark Thomas,

Thomas said he thinks that Ney got caught up in a situation that other political figures could easily get caught up in as well.

Ney will spend his sentence at a Morgantown federal prison, where he'll get treatment for his alcohol problems.
