War Takes Toll In Ohio

Posted: 3:55 pm EST February 9, 2007Updated: 5:55 pm EST February 9, 2007

Next week, the House is expected to formally state its opposition to the president's troop surge in Iraq.

And with nearly 150 Ohioans killed in action, Ohio legislators are expected to be fiercely divided.

Ohio Republican Rep. John Boehner, who serves the district including West Chester, called the bill "political theater" and said Republicans will offer their own legislation that supports the surge but requires the Iraqi government to meet certain benchmarks.

"As we get into this debate next week, victory is the only option. Fleeing Iraq will only provide a safe haven for terrorists," Boehner said.

The Senate is also expected to face off.

All eyes are on Sen. George Voinovich , R-Ohio, one of a handful of Republicans who opposes President George W. Bush's plan. Voinovich has not indicated how he will vote.

But Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said the American people clearly want troops to be redeployed.

"The President and too many members of Congress in the House and Senate say, 'Stay the course in Iraq' instead of 'Redeploy our troops,' which is clearly what the American people want and clearly in the long-term interest of our country," Brown said.

U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson , D-Ohio, also said he will support the resolution disapproving of the surge.
