Implosion At Bayer Plant

A building at the Bayer Industrial Park in New Martinsville is now demolished.

At 10 a.m. Saturday morning, about 55 pounds of dynamite exploded to take down a Lanxess Corp. building at the Bayer Industrial Park in New Martinsville.

That wasn't enough power for the building that used to produce iron oxide to crumble.

The building, which was made of steel columns and has been standing for 30 years, didn't budge.

An hour and a half later, Route 2 was still shut down with help from the West Virginia State Police, and sheriff's departments from Marshall and Wetzel counties.

Jim Covington, the General Site Manager for Bayer, said, "They helped us block the road and made sure people were protected from the dust cloud and any effects."

Crews added more dynamite to demolish the building.

Covington said the demolition is making room for new beginnings.

"That's available piece of real estate that we want it have available for future tenants," said Covington.

In October of last year, Bayer announced the company would lay off 230 workers.

Covington said they are working with the union on the situation.
