Communities React To Child Abduction

Wednesday, February 21, 2007 – updated: 12:55 pm EST February 21, 2007

The alley behind Wheeling's Fifth Street Convienent store is quiet but it has been a very restless night for neighbors who learned a man in his 20s forcefully abducted an 11-year-old girl, pushed her into his truck, then left her across the river in Bridgeport, OH.

"When it hits home, it's really frightening to have this happen. Our kids aren't safe anywhere anymore and there needs to be something done," said Brigdgeport resident Charles Furbee.

Police taped off the alley and scoured the street for clues, but one neighbor said she saw the suspect's truck in the neighborhood around February 17.

The recent crime has parents desperate to keep their kids safe.

"I hope they find this person and prosecute him to the limit," said Furbee. "These people are sick and they need to be locked up and kept locked up."

Now, neighbors are locking their doors, keeping a closer eye on strangers and putting faith in police.
