Carbon Monoxide Leak Sickens Shoppers

A Benwood store was evacuated when dozens of people fell ill after a carbon monoxide leak.

It was just about an hour before closing at the Benwood Value City when dozens of employees and customers started falling ill.

"We had a call about a bunch of people getting sick in the store. Their eyes were burning, throats were scratchy and itchy," said Capt. Spencer Risden of the Benwood Fire Department.

The building was immediately evacuated and about 25 people were sickened. One person had to be rushed to the hospital while fire crews began to search for the cause. Once crews got inside, their detection devices quickly picked up high volumes of carbon monoxide coming from a single source.

"They were coming out of the venting system. That's where we picked up the most of the carbon monoxide, coming out of the vents from the ceiling," said Risden.

The firemen were protected from the fumes by using breathing devices -- but of those who were exposed to the fumes, emergency officials said they may suffer from headaches for the next few days.

NEWS9 was told that a furnace expert from Huntington, W.Va. will be called in Monday morning to take a look at the venting system. The store will remain closed until it's repaired.
