Neighborhood Evacuated As Police Bust Wetzel County Meth Lab

A neighborhood was evacuated and hazmat crews filled the streets as police bust the first meth lab in Wetzel County.

Wetzel County Sheriff James Hoskins said it was a tip that led authorities to the home just feet from Hundred High School. When they entered the home, Hoskins said a methamphetamine cook was in progress.

Police arrested Shawn Pierce and Mitchell Williams inside the home. Police said they believe the duo was staying in the home with friends. Hoskins said this is actually the second time Williams has been arrested on a similar charge. He's currently out on bond for related charges in Kanawah County.

The Wetzel County Sheriff's department started planning late Saturday night after receiving a tip, and brought in hazmat crews, firemen, EMS workers, and police officers from state, county, and local agencies to evacuate the area because meth labs can be very dangerous.

Crews worked well into morning hours to disable the lab, and when the area was considered safe again people were able to return home.

"It was best that we activate out special response team and make sure the area was secure. Anytime you have something like this, the primary concern is to make sure everybody is safe," said Hoskins.

Both suspects are charged with attempting to operate a meth lab. They are being held in the Northern Regional Jail, and bond has been set at $25,000 each.
