Youth Basketball Coach Accused Of Being Internet Predator

A local youth basketball coach was arrested after Pennsylvania police said he made a sexual proposition to someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl.

Kurt Elias, 35, was arrested in Wellsburg on a fugitive from justice warrant Thursday.

Pennsylvania State Attorney General Tom Corbett said Elias used an Internet chat room to try to arrange the meeting.

Corbett said Elias sent nude photographs to who he thought was a girl but who was actually an undercover agent from Pennsylvania's Child Predator Unit.

Elias coaches recreation basketball leagues at the Millsop Community Center in Weirton. News of the arrest came as a surprise to the center's parks and recreation director.

"I was shocked. I've never had any complaints; never had any reason to question any of what he's done here as a coach," said Terry Wiegel.

Wiegel said there is never alone one-on-one contact between coaches and children. Further, he said the entire community center is under video surveillance for children's safety.

The center also has a policy that children under 12 years old must be accompanied by a parent at all times, and he said all coaches sign paperwork regarding any criminal record.

Wiegel said if Elias is found guilty, he will no longer be permitted to coach.

Friday, Elias remained in jail awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.
