Ohio Smoking Ban Looming
Wednesday, May 2, 2007 – updated: 4:37 pm EDT May 2, 2007
In just hours, state and local health departments will begin enforcing the Ohio's smoking ban.The smoking ban has actually been in effect since Dec. 7. Since then, the Ohio Department of Health said they've had more than 17,000 complaints of alleged violations.Starting at midnight, any violations reported will be forwarded to local health departments.Anyone found in violation will receive a warning letter first, then a $100 fine for a second offense and up to a $2,500 fine for a fifth violation. Both the establishment and the person breaking the rule will be fined.Because of an April 30 temporary restraining order, Ohio's private clubs will be subject to the smoking ban until at least May 14, when a hearing is scheduled in Columbus. No fines will be issued on Thursday because local health departments must first conduct an on-site investigation before giving out penalties. Those who want to file a complaint are asked to call 866-559-6446, a toll-free enforcement number.Stay with NEWS9 for continuing coverage.-Renee Cardelli & Shelby Zarotney, NEWS9
