Wheeling Rape Case Still A Top Priority

Posted: 1:04 pm EDT May 23, 2007Updated: 2:02 pm EDT May 23, 2007

Three months have passed since a Wheeling girl was abducted from her neighborhood street, taken across the river to St. Clairsville where whe was raped and then dropped off in Bridgeport, police said.

Wheeling police are still working alongside the Federal Bureau of Investgation searching for clues in the case. After thousands of tips, police said the case will stay a priority as long as leads keep coming.

Investigators said the public is still generating tips, from license plate numbers to vehicle sightings to addresses. Many of the leads have been called in a number of times, but detectives said the FBI has set up a database with all the leads they have already received and checked out.

Detectives said they want people to keep calling in with information, even if people think someone else may have already called the tip in, said John Burke, a Wheeling police officer. The department doesn't want anyone to hold back information that could be crucial in the case, he said.

Burke said he doesn't know if the abductor has or will try to target someone else.
