A man with a criminal history is accused of robbing a Jefferson County home and beating the family's dog to death.

Neil Rager, 22, of Rayland, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of beating the beagle to death with a lead pipe while it was chained up in the garage.

Police said Rager is also accused of stealing an ATV and chainsaw.

According to Sheriff Fred Abdalla, a 17-year-old female is accused of being an accomplice. Abdalla said the girl was bragging to classmates about the robbery and the beating.

Abdalla said Rager has a criminal history and served two years in prison.

Both suspects are in police custody. No charges were filed as of Wednesday afternoon because the prosecutor still must review the case.
