Former Ohio State Intern Releases Letter

Posted: 4:33 pm EDT July 25, 2007Updated: 6:18 pm EDT July 25, 2007

In June, Ohio state intern Jared Ilovar lost a device that contained the personal information of thousands of Ohio residents.

Now, Ilovar no longer has a job with the state and is telling his side of the story in a letter released Wednesday saying the governor is using him as a scapegoat.

In the letter, Ilovar said the only instruction he received was from another intern on how to look after the data tapes containing personal information. Just as he was told, Ilovar took the tapes out of the building at whichhe worked and returned them the next day.

“I was never instructed by my employer on how to properly secure, store or watch over the data tapes at night. Only after the theft of the tape I was made aware that there was some type of policy regarding these backup tapes. I have yet to actually read the policy,” Ilovar wrote.

While parked at his Hillard apartment complex parking lot, the Devry University student’s car was broken into and the data tape was stolen.

The tape contained the names and Social Security numbers of thousands of Ohio state employees, including Buckeye coach Jim Tressel and Gov. Tim Strickland.

After the threat, Ilovar said he was asked to sign resignation papers or would be told he was terminated.

In his letter, Ilovar said he refused to sign and was fired on Friday. He also asked the governor for another internship and said he will always ask for written policy instructions from now on.
