Yorkville Man Accused of Raping 12-Year-Old

A 20-year-old Yorkville man has been arrested on suspicion of luring a 12-year-old girl into the woods and sexually assaulting her, police said.

Cole Barton, 20, who lives on the outskirts of Yorkville, was arrested late Saturday night and charged with rape.

The alleged victim’s mother said her daughter was afraid to come forward at first, but said she sensed something was wrong.

"I could tell something was wrong before by her demeanor. Her baby sitter and my boyfriend knew something was wrong. She had come home filthy and she never comes home dirty," said the girl’s mother.

Later, the girl told her mother and police that Barton had lured her into the woods by telling her one of her friends was back there.

"It's not consensual when you lie to someone, take them into the woods, and tell them their friend is back there. It's not consensual when you're a minor," said the mother.

The mother said she immediately took her daughter to the hospital.

Police said they can't release much about the evidence because they are still investigating the possibility of other victims.

Barton, who police said has a criminal history, is being held in the Belmont County Jail on a $20,000 bond.

"He took off of my daughter what I cannot give back to her. No money is going to replace that. I think $20,000 is way too low for him," said the mother.

Barton is scheduled to be arraigned in Belmont County Monday morning.
