Judge Making Changes In Wake Of Courtroom Chaos

Posted: 5:07 pm EDT August 7, 2007

A Common Pleas Court judge said changes will be made in his courtroom after a man attacked his son's killer during a hearing Monday.

"It is unusual he went as close as he did. That will change. In the future, the victims' coordinator will be told to do the statements behind the rail. If not, I'll stop them," said Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese.

Michael Sweat attacked Antonio Clifford in the courtroom after Clifford admitted to killing Sweat's son.

"This is one of the most out-of-control (incidents) we've had," Bruzzese said. "It's something we prepare for and hope it doesn't happen."

The Ohio legislature provided a statute to allow victims' impact statements to be read during sentencing hearings, but does not provide rules for where they are read in the courtroom.

In fact, Bruzzese said it's not unusual for the victims to confront the defendants. However, he said, "When people get excited and do what they shouldn't do, that's not helping anybody."
