Weirton City Council Working On Table Game Guidelines

The issue of table gaming at West Virginia's race tracks caused a lot of debate around the state.

Vegas-style gambling is legal in three counties.

Members of Weirton city council are taking steps to make sure table games don't spread throughout the city.

There is no serious widespread discussion about allowing table games in the city of Weirton, but some council members said they are already taking action because they say they don't want the games saturating the city.

Some city council members are comparing the table games to what they say is happening with limited video lottery machines.

City council has sent a request to the planning commission, asking them if a certain district in the city can be designated to allow table games.

City council member George Kondik said if table games do get approved, he doesn't want them inside businesses all over Weirton.

Kondik said, "It's just like the limited video lottery machines. When they came, they mushroomed. It was unbelievable what happened with the LVLs. All of a sudden everybody had it. When gaming comes in is it going to be widespread? Who knows that."

Kondik said in the future, even if the planning commission decides a certain area of the city is allowed to have table games, the state can override that decision.

On Wednesday city leaders will discuss how to regulate table games in the city if they ever come to Weirton.
