Police Make Arrest In Alleged Nursing Home Sex Assault

Police said a mentally handicapped woman was sexually assaulted inside a Moundsville nursing home. NEWS9 has learned one of the men living in the home is being charged with the crime.

Roy Reed Sheldon, 22, was placed into a cruiser and headed to jail after his arraignment Wednesday afternoon.

Moundsville police said he sexually assaulted a 57-year-old mentally handicapped woman who was a resident of Dora Allietta Memorial Home on Eighth Street.

"She doesn't have the capacity to consent to sex," said Chief Jim Kudlak of the Moundsville Police Department about the alleged victim.

Police got the call over the weekend from a concerned employee after the alleged victim said Sheldon had sex with her.

"Because of her mental capacity, we had to ask the Harmony House to do a forensic interview. They took her up there and were able to use the anatomical dolls and we were able to figure out pretty much what happened," said Kudlak.

A blanket covers the sign at the nursing home -- and it turns out Sheldon is no stranger to the place. Police said he lives on the top floor and his wife manages the home.

NEWS9 caught up with an employee who said everyone there is now safe, and Sheldon's wife no longer works there.

Sheldon is facing sexual assault, sexual abuse, and indecent exposure charges. Police said he gave a confession, but denies having intercourse with the woman.

Kudlak said their investigation is far from over.

"We haven’t had any complaints of this nature, but because of the nature of this complaint we are going to look further and see if there's anything else that may have been happening," said Kudlak.

Sheldon is being held at the Northern Regional Jail on a $100,000 bond.
