A School That's Been Through A Strike Reacts To Harrison March

Harrison Hills teachers are on strike, and it's an all too familiar site for another local school district.Just two years ago this November, teachers in Bridgeport went on strike over wage and benefit issues. The teachers marched for 14 days in a row, and district Superintendent, Mark Matz, said it was a bad situation for all parties involved.Matz said he has nothing but unpleasant memories of the strike, and he said he knows what pain the march on the picket line can bring.Matz blames the state of Ohio, and their lack of funding, for the reason so many teachers strike-- or at least threaten to."It's not easy with the way this state has done such a poor job of funding schools," Matz said.State Sen. Jason Wilson agrees that Ohio does not provide adequate funding to state schools. Wilson said that of the 600 or more schools in the state, nearly 300 of them are in financial trouble--- much like Harrison County. When it comes to teachers choosing to strike, it's a recurring problem. For example, here in the Valley Bridgeport has marched, Barnesville has threatened to and now Harrison's on the line. And Matz said the worst part of it all is that most often, the money teachers want just isn't there."The schools don't have the finances to be able to pay them what they deserve," Matz said.
