Harrison Hills Schools Outlines Picketing Rules

Wednesday, October 3, 2007 – updated: 4:48 pm EDT October 3, 2007

As the Harrison Hills teachers strike entered its third day, both sides met behind closed doors -- but they weren't discussing ending the strike.

The school board and the teachers union came to an agreement on how many picketers can be present on the line and where they are allowed to demonstrate.

The rules vary for each of the six picketing sites, said John Avouris, labor relations consultant for the union.

Superintendent Jim Drexler initially said he want to file a restraining order against picketers because he said people on the picket line have been surrounding vehicles and it's not safe.

Instead of fling the complaint, however, Drexler met with the union to find a solution. Later in the afternoon, Drexler and Avouris, along with their attorneys, met with a judge to discuss the picketing situation.

Avouris said, "By and large the order preserves the right for the majority of our members at each building site to be on the picket line. This will give a clear definition to our members as to what they can do (and) what they can't do, then hopefully we can avoid any unfortunate injuries."

Three injuries on the picket lines this week remain under investigation. The union said there are no future talks set between teachers and the board to try and settle the strike.
