Harrison Hills Parents Rally Ends In Shouting Match

Thursday, October 4, 2007 – updated: 9:58 am EDT October 5, 2007

More than 200 parents in the Harrison Hills School District came together for a rally that ended in a shouting match on Thursday night.

It was set to be a rally of support for students as the teachers ended day 4 on the picketline.

Parents aired their concerns about substitute teachers and the fear of sending their kids, while others defended their decision to send their children to class.

Members of the crowd yelled at each other for most of the rally, but once the crowd calmed, parents told me their biggest concern was the children.

"I came out here to support our students,” said Joyce Jones. “That's what this is all about."

Organizer Jo’el Wade was left in tears, and she said her original mission was to get a petition signed to close the schools during the strike.

“I wanted it more civilized than this,” said Wade. “People got heated.”

Wade said the emotional rally has not made her give up, and she will take her concerns to the superintendent on Friday morning.

Wade said she planned on meeting at the administrative office at 7:00a.m.
