Fourth Picketer Struck During Harrison Hills Teachers Strike

Friday, October 5, 2007 – updated: 6:19 pm EDT October 5, 2007

A female teacher at Hopedale Elementary School was struck by a private vehicle Friday morning around 10:30 a.m, which is the fourth accident on the picket lines in the past five days.

Sixth-grade teacher Karen Hanzle was struck while in the teachers’ permitted area for picketing. Hanzle was taken to the hospital by ambulance for minor injuries said the Harrison County Sheriff's Department.

“I had heard that the driver of that car stated that he was not going to stop, and he didn’t, I saw that, he did not stop. He just kept plowing right through the crowd of teachers,” said Jeff Nozer, a witness to the incident.

The captain of the Hopedale Elementary picketers said that the driver was a substitute teacher but the sheriffs department, at this point, cannot release the driver’s name. There is no word on whether there will be charges filed.
